I am very excited for my week off after this program is finished. I am going back to Texada for one week to just chill out and hang out with friends. Also i am looking forward to some awesome food that my parents can make for me. This will be my one week off after the program. It seems like most people are in the same boat as me where they want to take a week off of school. I think that this is the best idea because we have worked hard this past year and deserve some time to gather our thoughts. Most of use will be burn out by the end of the week too.

As October starts my birthday is getting closer and closer. This will be my19th birthday so i am especially excited for this one. All my friends have already turned nineteen and i can only think of a handful of people i know that are still eighteen like me. Being at BCIT I felt like i missed out on a lot of opportunists this year because i was only eighteen. During the start of my program i was the youngest kid on resistance. All my friends in the house were atleast nintenn. This meant that they would go downtown to go to bars leaving me behind. It cant come soon enough because it seems like i have been eighteen for three years now.

Today is the day were i have to basically study and do projects all day. This has happened because earlier into the week i was very sick and was unable to study without getting a headache. Also once i got a bit better i had to finish off my practicum. Pressure for me can be a good and bad thing. There is certian things that i am better at under pressure. More specifically I am able to get projects done under pressure well but study is a completely different story. This is going to make for a very interesting week as im sure i will get less than twenty five hours of sleep this week.

It is now officially fall I can feel it in the air. I guess I shouldn’t be to mad because it is almost October already and still very warm out for this season. The one thing that i know im going to miss is the sun. During winter, especially in Vancouver, I find myself being very depressed because the sun doesn’t come out for months at a time, or at least that how i remember it. From what i hear about Vancouvers typical winter season is that it rains for weeks at a time also. This was sum what true last year but apparent we had a relatively good winter for rain. When i heard this I was shocked and hope that its not true.

Today i heard my my buddy from Ukraine. He is one of my best buddies that i met during resistance life. It was very nice to hear from him. I think that one day he is going to be a very important man as he is in his second round of intership in Ottawa. Andrew was a very interesting guy because i have never met someone like him. Being a different nationality he had a very different personality than anyone i have ever met. He is very forward with people and tells it how it is.

I cant wait to go snowboarding this season. I have never really snowboarded but living in north Vancouver i am only fifteen minutes away from grouse! It feels like since coming to Vancouver i left a lot my hobbies back on “the rock” (texada island) this includes mountain biking, atving, and running. I am very excited to get back into a sport. I feel soo out of shape right now that I seriously dont think that i could run 3 kilometers anymore. Back in high school i really can’t believe how good in shape i was as every day i would run a minimum of 8 kilometers up a big semi mountain by our school. This run was called the switchback because it was a zig-zag path to the top. Hopefully starting boarding will spark my interest into running again.

One week left!! It really hasn’t settled in yet. It’s going to be extremely weird not coming to school next week not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing. I have never worked for longer than a month and a half so when i actually enter the work industry it might be really different at first. I think that working is truly the best thing for me at this point in my life. When i look back at the year that was BCIT i know that i have learned more than just the things at school. My experience at BCIT has overal been good as a hole; this includes my time resistance.

As my portfolio website nears completions i am very excited to launch it. Even better is that when typing michael or mike renton into google my site is one of the first sites to come up. I am considering installing a wordpress blog and theming to my website. This will have to happen after school though as my main goal right now is to get the majority of the content and site structure up and running.

Today we had our interviews with Val. For me this went relatively smoothly althought there are many things that i still need to work on. My biggest fear is that i will be asked a question that i cannot answer. This could may be combated by having a large list of things that i can bring up. This class is important for me because in the event that i dont stay in this industry I can easily translate the skills that i have learned in class to other industrys.

Presentation skills and public speaking is something that i need serve improvement on. In the future I would like to attend a class on presentations and public speaking. I need to learn how to relax and say what i mean. It seems like I can really think on the spot when speaking in public or say what i mean even though i know i get the concept in my head.

I am very excited for this weekend because my parents and my friends are coming up to visit me. Having my parents around to cook is awsome and i take this chance now to learn all i can about cooking. I know first hand if your parents ask you to help to with dinner say yes! it saves you a lot frustration and frozen pizza in the end. My friend and I are going to the PNE on sunday and it will be nice to see one of my oldest friends come up and see my new apartment in North Van.

Fourth Post

So I have been working at my practicum for two weeks now and have been enjoying my time and experience. Since starting work for them I feel more confident in my skills because I have actually worked in the industry. Prior to my practicum i wasnt as confident about my skills simply because i had no exposer to what they actually wanted and how the industry worked. Also since our program is so very broad i wasn’t sure if i was on the same level as someone graduating from different programs. Although now that i look at what we have learned this year I feel that as new media students we can offere a lot more to a company than most people think. With such broad knowledeg of many different things we can help in things that may not necessarily aimed at our position or job title.

For my practicum i have been exposed to other things besides just video editing; such as post production. I am enjoying my time at Oh Boy Productions and think that it may lead to some very interesting oppurtunities in the future.

After waiting two weeks to get shaw to hook up the internet and cable I have finally have internet. The three weeks were i didnt have internet made me realize how important the internet is to me and how i find information. This made me thing how did people find information before the internet. For example when i need to call BC Hydro I wasnt entire how to contact them without internet. Later i realize that i could use a item call a phone book.

Since I have got internet I have been downloading stop non-stop for three days straight. Internet has become a piece of this generations life and will continue to change how generations grow up and Utilize the internet. I believe that the internet is going in a completely different direction than were it is right now. As the browser slowly begins to go out and newer programs that can have 3d media are becoming useable. I have many views on how the internet will change in the future.

I have just recently moved into my new apartment which is located in North Vancouver. This causes me to have a much more lengthy commute from school. The apartment is very nice but lacks the feel of home without cable or internet.I moved due to the fact that my sister needed someone to help pay rent as she is going to BCIT Marine campus. Although his will make my life a bit harder I hope that it will make up for being more exciting without the harsh rules of living on BCIT resistance.

I hope to find a practcum soon as i have not been successful in my hunt yet. At this point i am starting to feel alittle desperate and am almost willing to take any practcum even if its not related to my area of interest. Freelance could be the solution for me but could be extremely complicated without any client experience.

As I get closer and closer to the end of my program I begin to look back. When i look back at the vast amount of things that i learned this year, I cant help to think that this is the programs greatest strength but also its greatest weakness. Learning virutally ever faset of new media is important but it lacks giving the students a strong grasp on any one thing. Although very broad I feel like this program has pointed me in the right direction and has given me important insight into what it means to work hard. At its core this could be seen as a starter program to assess your strengths and abilities in this industry.

Beyound school I have learned many values that cant be learned in a classroom. Things such as living on my own and real world responsibilities have come into play this entire year. I have also met a wide assortment of interesting and diverse people who i have become friends with. Overall i have learned many important things that can only benfit me in the future.
